Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS+)

Product overview

With years of technology leadership, L3Harris offers a variety of short and long-range OEM and retrofit solutions that provide terrain awareness and warning solutions for commercial and military aircraft.  Each product builds on a unique set of advanced terrain prediction and avoidance technology that provides pilots greater situational awareness for terrain, obstacles an airport databases depending on the platform and selected TAWS product.

Class A TAWS

The L3Harris standard Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) provides warnings based on the unique performance capability of an aircraft. It can be applied to air transport, regional, business or military aircraft to avoid Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) incidents, giving operators the appropriate amount of time to clear terrain with a greater margin to maneuver. When the system detects that the aircraft does not have sufficient climb capability to clear the terrain, it generates an “Avoid Terrain” alert.

The Terrain Advisory Line (TAL) is a patented feature that indicates an impending alert should the aircraft continue on its flight path. This distinct feature provides pilots with a “heads-up” indication of where a Terrain Ahead caution will occur if the current flight path angle is maintained.

Low-RNP (Required Navigation Performance) capability is also available for long-range and single aisle Airbus aircraft.

Class B TAWS

The L3Harris Class B TAWS is implemented in the LYNX® product for general aviation and helicopter* use. The Lynx is a multi-functioning system combining both Traffic Advisory System (TAS) or Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) I and Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) In data into a single, more precise traffic awareness system for helicopter operators. The system utilizes a dual-band ADS-B In receiver capable of receiving data from both 1090 and Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) 978.

*The Lynx is TSO C151 Class B fixed-wing TAWS. It is not a certified HTAWS (TSO C194) for Helicopters

TAWS+®

The L3Harris Class B TAWS is implemented in the LYNX® product for general aviation and helicopter* use. The Lynx is a multi-functioning system combining both Traffic Advisory System (TAS) or Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) I and Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) In data into a single, more precise traffic awareness system for helicopter operators. The system utilizes a dual-band ADS-B In receiver capable of receiving data from both 1090 and Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) 978.

TAWS+ Performance

TAWS+ Performance extends conventional TAWS systems, offering a higher level of safety afforded by basing alerts on an aircraft’s actual ability to climb. The modeling of aircraft climb capability helps to reduce nuisance alerts by ensuring that alerts occur at the appropriate location based on aircraft performance.

Terrain Advisory Line (TAL)

The Terrain Advisory Line provides an indication of where a Terrain Ahead caution will occur if the current flight path angle is maintained.  The Terrain Advisory Line can be displayed up to two minutes before the caution alert would occur.  The Terrain Advisory Line extends 30 degrees on either side of the current aircraft track. The TAL is customizable for each individual operator.
