L3Harris and Comtech Introduce First-of-Its-Kind Tactical SATCOM Modem

This new iteration of the C2 modem is exclusively aligned with L3Harris' portfolio of rapidly deployable multi-orbit SATCOM terminals, including the lightweight Panther™ II Man-Portable VSAT, the Hawkeye™ 4 Lite 1.3M Fly-Away and the new Hawkeye 4 XY 2.6M.

L3Harris and Comtech have also collaborated with space solutions company SES  to enable the C2/MP to be the first embeddable modem certified for use on SES' Medium Earth Orbit (DBV-S2X) mPower constellation. Building on this capability, the C2/MP is currently undergoing U.S. Space Force Delta 8  certification for use on the Wideband Global Satellite Communications constellation with Enhanced Bandwidth Efficient Modem (EBEM) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) waveforms . This certification will make it the only embeddable modem available to operate on SES’ Medium Earth Orbit Global Services (mGS)  and the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) system.

The C2/MP modem is additionally capable of providing complete global, high-throughput, multi-orbit coverage. For the first time, field operators requiring multi-orbit access can achieve it by utilizing a single C2/MP modem paired with one of L3Harris’ tactical SATCOM terminals. This combination delivers more capability in less hardware.

“This is a unique pairing of technologies that significantly enhances operator effectiveness and overall mission success,” said Chris Aebli, President, Mission Critical Communications, L3Harris. “This collaboration was a significant undertaking and results in an embeddable modem that can operate between the mGS and WGS constellations, making it the only SATCOM solution of its kind in the marketplace.”

Bringing together each of these multi-orbit resilient waveform capabilities – including DSSS, which is highly resistant to interference, detection, interception and jamming – into one hardware package is a game-changer for today’s SATCOM operators.

Built on Comtech’s native software-defined architecture, the C2/MP delivers operational flexibility and resiliency, supporting fast modem reconfiguration depending on operational needs.

“Collaborating with L3Harris on this effort reflects Comtech’s continued focus on delivering resilient, software defined technologies that empower operators in some of the world’s most demanding environments,” said Daniel Gizinski, President of Comtech’s Satellite & Space Communications Segment. “This new modem demonstrates how industry partnership can accelerate innovation and give customers the flexibility and confidence they need to stay connected and mission ready.”

5650C2/MP embeddable multi-orbit modem pairing

The pairing of L3Harris tactical terminals and the C2/MP modem offer several breakthrough operational benefits, from certified, secure multi-orbit access with protected waveforms to interoperability and ease of use. The combination delivers access to secure sovereign and commercial Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) and HEO networks. Certified with satellite digital broadcast standard DVB-S2X for SES mPower , the system is powered by the only embeddable modem with MEO/GEO/HEO transmission security and can be paired with any L3Harris terminal for seamless integration. This provides the same interface with less training, enabling fast setup and deployment.

L3Harris is currently accepting orders for tactical SATCOM terminals paired with the C2/MP modem.
