L3Harris Advances Solid-Fueled Ramjet Propulsion for Greater Reach and Faster Effects

L3Harris has begun a full-scale solid-fueled ramjet (SFRJ) testing campaign essential for validating missile systems that provide greater speed and range. Tests conducted at the company’s Orange County, Virginia, site have demonstrated booster and SFRJ performance that aligned with expectations.

This internally funded effort is designed to provide U.S. forces more freedom of action, greater stand off options and faster response capability across high-end operational environments. L3Harris is advancing this technology for rapid integration into a family of multi-mission missiles.

“Our team continues to push the boundaries of ramjet propulsion through disciplined testing and new fuel chemistry,” said Scott Alexander, President, Propulsion Systems, Missile Solutions, L3Harris. “These test results will guide us as we continue to refine this critical propulsion technology that will deliver a clear operational advantage for the U.S. military.”

L3Harris’ innovative propulsion extends across several high-speed weapon efforts, including the development of a long-range, maneuverable interceptor and strike munitions.

“We are leveraging our deep expertise in propulsion, guidance and advanced manufacturing to deliver next-generation technology that provides capabilities aligned with evolving mission requirements,” said Alexander. “Our designs integrate innovative propulsion with advanced sensor technologies to create capable, modular and cost effective solutions deployable from existing platforms.”

L3Harris’ propulsion breakthroughs address key Department of War requirements to counter today’s threats across the battlefield. Increased range allows warfighters to engage threats at stand-off distances. Higher speed compresses an adversary’s decision cycle, reducing their ability to evade, reposition or conduct coordinated attack profiles. Cost effective scalability fulfills a critical acquisition requirement to deliver affordable mass.

Additional ground tests are planned for later this year, accelerating the transition of high-speed propulsion from laboratory validation to tactical capability and giving U.S. forces greater reach, faster effects and unmatched operational leverage.
