L3Harris Unfurlable Mesh Reflector Successfully Deploys on ESA’s Biomass Satellite

Built by L3Harris, the 12-meter unfurlable mesh reflector onboard the European Space Agency’s Biomass satellite has successfully deployed in orbit. Designed and manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space, the satellite was launched April 29 from Kourou, French Guiana. The spacecraft will enhance global understanding of Earth’s forests and their role in the carbon cycle.

L3Harris’ deployable reflector is a critical component of the Biomass satellite, a joint project between ESA and Airbus Defence and Space, featuring a folded rib design compactly stowed for launch before unfolding in space, similar to an umbrella.

“The successful deployment of our reflector aboard the Biomass satellite continues a legacy of providing customers with reliable, high-performance space antennas to meet their most challenging requirements,” said Ed Zoiss, President, Space and Airborne Systems, L3Harris. “We’re honored to play an integral role in the ESA’s mission to better understand Earth’s climate and ecosystems.”

L3Harris has more than 60 years of experience in developing and delivering space-based deployable antennas, with more than 100 reflectors successfully deployed to date. Our industry-leading investments in research and development have spurred rapid advancements in antenna technology, enabling the production of high-performance solutions such as unfurlable mesh antennas, fixed-mesh reflectors and high compaction ratio antennas.
