Shipboard Systems Integration

In 2020, L3Harris was awarded a contract by Fincantieri Marinette Marine for the shipboard system integration and production of major sub-systems onboard the future U.S. Navy Guided Missile Frigate (FFG-62). The program is developing the U.S. Navy’s newest surface combatant with initial plans to build a class of at least 10 ships. In support of the U.S. Navy's Constellation-class frigate program, FFG-62, as the largest partner to the Fincantieri FFG-62 team, L3Harris will be responsible for mission-critical subsystems, including the electric and propulsion systems, bridge and navigation systems, Frigate Architecture Framework (FAF) and Topside Analysis, in addition to aviation integration services.

The unique and diversified capabilities that L3Harris delivers on the FFG-62 program will distribute the power and propulsion needed to meet the U.S. Navy’s mission requirements throughout the world, in challenging geographic locations. The FAF is the network backbone of the FFG-62 frigate platform, allowing various enclaves on the ship to share information across multiple levels of security classifications. Supported enclaves include C5ISR communications, navigation, aviation and various ship systems to optimize operational performance. L3Harris’ Topside Analysis is used by the shipbuilder to design and optimize integration and deck placement of sensors and mission-critical systems to ensure high-performing electromagnetic performance and warfighting capability. The company's subject matter experts also provide recommendations to the equipment layout and tactical stations within the combat system spaces.

Reduced Manning, Increased Ship Control

As the drive to reduce manning in warships continues to gather pace, L3Harris' Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) is also proving its worth internationally on the U.K. Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier. The IPMS control system enables fewer operators to safely manage platform systems in all operational conditions. This fully integrated system provides operators real-time information on the platform, enabling decision-makers to operate more effectively, particularly in emergencies, by integrating the monitoring and control of the ship’s propulsion, electrical functions, auxiliaries, and damage control machinery and systems.

L3Harris has delivered over 350 racks of equipment on over 45 ships deployed around the world.

Delivering Sensing to the Fleet

L3Harris’ integrated electro-optical systems solutions also support Navies around the world. On the airborne side, the WESCAM MX™-20 product was developed and delivered to the U.S. Navy P-3 as the very first production WESCAM MX system, with hundreds of WESCAM MX-20 systems now deployed worldwide on P-3 aircraft. The company followed that success with the MX-20, now installed on the P-8 worldwide. In fact, in 2021 L3Harris delivered its 5,000th WESCAM MX system to the U.S. Navy for the P-8, neatly bookending four decades in support of the Navy.

L3Harris surface capabilities are deployed worldwide, with WESCAM MX-10MS supporting ships of all sizes including fast attack craft and RHIBs. The company's Mk-20 and Mk-46 systems are the standard EO narrow field-of-view system for capital ships worldwide. L3Harris provides unmatched imaging from our photonic masts in support of U.S. and Allied Nations. The company leverages its strengths of inherent reliability at the device, component and system level, and coordinates and collaborates throughout the corporation to ensure its products leverage L3Harris' collective knowledge on maritime environments.
